Clinical Review of Miliary Tuberculosis in Children

Abstract
|
|
|
The following results were obtained through the review conducted among 68 cases of miliary tuberculosis under the age of 15 years at Pediatric Department of Daegu Presbyterian Medical Center during the period of January 1967 through August 1975.
1) There was the increasing incidence of miliary tuberculosis for the last 23 years, noting 47% of total patients during of the same period.
2) The highest incidnce by age was noted as 70.6% in the group under the age of 3 years with the 2 cases of 2 months old.
3) The seasonal prevalence was spring showing 40% incidence.
4) The source of infection was found in 22.1% of cases and the majority of the infection was caused by their parents.
5) The chief complaints on admission were revealed in the order of fever, cough, vomiting, irritability, convulsion, etc.
6) Only 14.7% of the total patients had received the BCG innoculation.
7) The tuberculin skin test was done in 49 cases and obtained positive reaction in 53.1%.
8) Hematologic findings revealed mild degree of anemia in the majority of cases and ESR was increased. Leukocyte count was increased in 70% of cases.
9) The rate of positivity of AFB in sputm or gasric juice was 22.7% from direct smear and/or cu lture.
10) Tuberculous meningitis was the most common disease associated with miliary tuberculosis. 54961´ of cases of miliary tuberculosis were complicated by tuberculous meningitis with the highest incidence of 70% under the age of I year.
11) The treatment was done as the tripple therapy with INK PAS and SM. The corticosteroid was administered to the all of the cases.
12) 15 cases were died among 32 cases who had been able to have follow up check. In majority of cases, the clinical symptoms and the miliary shadows on X-ray were disappeaped within 24 weeks following treatment.
